Hymn to The Fallen

Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone has heard the song off of the Saving Private Ryan soundtrack called Hymn to the Fallen. About mid song there is a tuba solo where it seems to get pretty high. Does anyone know what the notes are for this solo or sheet music I can get a hand on without having to buy the complete score?

Our WE is throwing this on the next concert...I think it's just a c1. I'm not on the concert, so I just glanced at the parts. And I think you are referring to the chorale- its not really a solo.

*edit* I'm referring to the band arrangement...maybe not the same as the orchestra version.

It's a brass chorale that goes up to a middle C. The note before is a Db an octave below.

In the brass chorale section of the concert band arrangement mentioned earlier, the baritone and tuba parts are in unison on a high-for-tuba countermelody. It goes from first space Ab up to C above the staff. The last tow notes of the section is a skip from Db in the staff to C above. There are some brass band arrangements that put Eb and Bb tubas an octave apart with the Bb part in easy low range. The rest of the concert band chart goes down to low G or F, so the whole thing covers about 2-1/2 octaves. Outside of the aforementioned section it spends a lot of time on low Ab and stays in the lower part of the staff and below.

The brass chorale starts at 2:00, the funky tuba/euph melody starts at 2:20, and the nasty Db-middle C jump is at 2:32. So many people bonk on the Db-C jump that it often doesn't come through or it degenerates into mush; occasionally it's rewritten Db-down to C a half step below.

The orchestral version, the one heard on the sound track, goes up to the B below middle C in the brass chorale. It lies beautifully for tuba. John Williams really knows how to write for tuba so that you can feel like a hero without much actual effort.

My experience coincides with Monstertuba's. The leap from c in the staff to b natural above the staff lends some added poignancy. Also might make it a bit harder on a BBb. I once heard a recording by a European orchestra on which the tuba player went a half step down instead - wussy.

That take has the tuba go down a half step to B from C. But in this take, the tuba jumps up a M7 to the B natural right above the staff @2:13

I believe both are from the Boston Pops soundtrack recording of that piece. Very sweet tuba sound
