They have (essentially) terminated the employment of all of their current musicians, many of whom are my friends and colleagues. Auditioning for this organization as it currently stands will bring you the wrath of not only the AFM, but the musical community at large. Stay away.

Louisville seems to be the fast track to the black list but you can go audition if you'd like.

In a previous audition notice from the Louisville management I remember seeing a listing of instruments that they wanted and tuba was not listed. The flyer linked to above does not specify instrumentation but does specify "up to 50" positions available. WIth only 50 spots they might not be looking for a full time tuba player.

Anyone with aspirations of playing with a union orchestra would be wise to avoid this.

what did a union do for those musicians who are no longer working for this orchestra, other than to take a significant percentage of their income year-in and year-out until they were fired

The union is helping provide food, roof, and clothes to the majority of my colleagues in Louisville via the Strike Fund as well as provide legal council. The union community in Louisville has rallied to support the musicians and should be applauded for their efforts.

Likewise ICSOM and it's member orchestras have donated 10's of thousands to help.

As far as I am concerned, it's still MY job until I give it up.

Good luck with that.

This is no comparison to your situation but I lost a job with when we went on strike and the orchestra was blacklisted. The orchestra hired scabs. Three years later the union 'negotiated' with the orchestra and lifted the black listing AND the scabs kept the positions. I stayed in the union but lost any confidence I ever had.

Having read about the situation in Louisville, the management seems recalcitrant and it looks bleak. Best of luck with the whole stinkin' mess.
