Anybody know any master tuba pedagogues in DC?

I need an amazing, kind, master brass pedagogue to fix me in the DC area. I'm talkin' like Arnold Jacobs II. Any suggestions?

I don't know which of the service band members (current or former) teach lessons, but all of those tuba players are in that area and are "holy crap" kinds of players. Mike Bunn is also down there. Also the staff at local colleges (Steve Dumaine, Scott Cameron, etc.) may teach non-student players as well. Take a trip up to Baltimore and you have another set of people like Dave Fedderly, Ed Goldstein, Kevin Ladd, and a bunch of other people I cant think of right now.

In short, there are a ton of excellent tuba players all around you! Good luck!

"Arnold Jacobs II" is only a slight exaggeration regarding David Fedderly, pedagogically.

+1 for Mike Bunn, who is an amazing player and a really inspiring teacher.

Anyone in the four premier bands can be considered a top-level expert on playing, too.

Toby Hanks is another possibility...maybe? I studied with him when I was in college down there, though I have no clue where he lives or teaches now.

Kevin Ladd may or may not be Arnold Jacobs II, but he is Kevin Ladd I. He is an outstanding teacher and a terrific person. If you are "fixable," he ought to be able to do it. I believe you can set up lessons with Kevin through Baltimore Brass.

When I first met Kevin about 6 or 7 years ago, he and I were the 2 tuba players in a concert band made (mostly) of public school teachers. I didn't know him and figured he was just a teacher who played really really well. After the concert, I said something like "Wow, you sounded great, where are you from?" I felt a little embarrassed when he told me his background at Syracuse, Juilliard, studying with Joe Novotny, etc.

If I'd have known that beforehand, I would have been a bit nervous to play the concert with my bell in his right ear!

I'm just north of DC in Maryland. If you want a different perspective, I can show you things about your playing that "traditional" teachers don't even know about at all.

Mr. Fedderly is an obvious choice, but (at least according to google) he and Mr. Baer are both teaching at Juilliard. It would seem to me that (including the train ride) that appointment would consume a minimum of one day per week. In addition to that, he has a very full-time job in the Baltimore Symphony and owns a music store.

Dave is definitely in a position to be choosy. I don't know how selective he is based on age or playing ability or his present workload (one would have to ask him), but I do know that he won't take on students not prepared to be fully committed to the program.
