Things a great tuba spouse says:
I’ll start the list.
1. On the drive home from the community band concert last night, my awesome wife said we sounded great and “I especially like the songs where the tubas get to play loud.”
2. “You don’t practice enough. I like to hear you play.”
3. “If one of those pretty YamaYork tubas would make you that happy dear, we’ll find a way to pay for it.” (Of course she knows I’m too frugal to go ahead with that idea being just an amateur that I am.)
4. “Your tuba friends are nice. Do we have enough beer?”

Upon seeing the credit card statement after I bought a 621BBb from Matt, "You paid WHAT for WHAT!?" Later after I sold it for what I paid 'cause I wasn't that crazy about it, "You really sounded good on that tuba." Then even later after Joe fixed my ebay O-99, "That sounds the best yet. Think you'll ever buy a new tuba?" The door is open a crack. Yes it is.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

My sainted wife has a whole disertation on what it is like being married to a tuba player. It apparently was the source of many laughs for my colleagues at an orchestra social gathering. If I can get her to put it in written form I will post it at a later date.

I have heard #1--3 (or similar) from my wife many times, and feel like a lucky man for that.
Additions to the list:
5) You should go check out the tuba store in NJ on your day off. You haven't been in a while!
6) Oh, a travel tuba? You should get one!
7) Get the real German-made version, not the Chinese copy [NOT trying to open that can of worms, just makes me happy to hear my wife agree with my personal position/opinion on it!]

After playing the Janacek Sinfonietta my (now) wife answered, to my question "which was your favourite bit?" -
"well, it all just sounded loud and I didn't know when you were playing. But when you put that big thing in your bell I stopped reading for a bit to watch"

Because all the accounts are joint, my wife did sign to extend the credit card so I could get my 186. When we got married, I was electric bassist for three bands. She knew going in what she would have to put up with. She married me anyway.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

"I'm actually getting used to it."
I'm new to the tuba and therefore so is she. I was pretty happy to hear this because it could have been a lot worse.

Matt, I remember my then fiancée, now lovely wife, watching my friend's puppy for him while we were in your store for over four hours trying to decide if I should buy a Willson you had or a Hirsbrunner that Dave Fedderly received permission to bring to the store for me to compare. (that's the horn you guys recently sold for me!). Four hours in July, with a puppy, can't believe she married me!!! It will be 18 years this octuba 14th!!

Re: Things a great tuba spouse says:
My wife suggested that I buy a new tuba when I started playing in quintet at church. I protested, based on cost, and she insisted. We are a two tuba family (she bought the first one for $20) and she makes dinner every night. I'm keeping her. (No she doesn't have a sister).
