Up here in Maine we also have 4 seasons:Doc wrote:You might not realize it, but down here in south Texas near the coast, we do have four seasons:

Still Summer
Christmas

Over here on the Pacific maritime side of the continent, spring is kind of a vague thing. We can plant peas in January, but in May it's still cold for tomatoes, and real unmistakeable summer might be months off.

I'm sure most of us would agree with you, Dan. Personally, I believe we could scale back on the indoctrination, which would leave room for more of the fine arts.TubaTinker wrote:I like Mike Huckabee's thoughts on music education:

Tuesday, June 5th is the 'Transit of Venus'. Don't look at it or you'll go blind.

How do folks feel about the Sousa march, `Transit of Venus'? Deservedly obscure?TubaTinker wrote:Tuesday, June 5th is the 'Transit of Venus'. Don't look at it or you'll go blind.

Re: Update Update
There is a thread currently running the the Yahoo 'Community Music' forum. A few band directors have commented that Sousa's "Transit of Venus" is less than spectacular as compared to some of his better know works.Donn wrote:How do folks feel about the Sousa march, `Transit of Venus'? Personally... the story behind the march makes it very worthy of being played in a concert as it makes for great commentary.
There are several clips of it on You Tube. It's just a march but the story is great!
We're going to put the NASA webcam up during rehearsal Tuesday night so we can watch the event while we play the march.
Here's the link... http://venustransit.nasa.gov/webcasts/nasaedge/

It isn't explained on the clips I've seen. (?)

Re: Update Update
Nah, anyone really can edit Wikipedia. Surely, John Philip Sousa could have logged in and editted the story to make it look like something mysterious and exciting and make him out to look like the cat's pajamas. I don't need a hound to tell me this smells fishy.
