The Lexington Philharmonic is a per service orchestra
2011-2012 rates are $109.28/service for principals and 2nd clarinet is paid at $89.21/service
All applicants must demonstrate U.S. Citizenship or legal eligibility to accept employment with the Lexington Philharmonic.
For information on audition repertoire click on the instrument you wish to audition for.
Auditions will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Lexington, KY.
Deadline for materials is August 14, 2012.

Any idea on how many services throughout the season? Just curious as to what kind of commitment this would require.

If, going forward, their future seasons are similar to their currently posted season, they play 6 classical concerts and 2 "specials."

Not all of these programs use tuba. Since it's per service, if you're not playing, they're not paying. I would assume they have 3-4 rehearsals per concert program (don't know that for sure), which means each concert program would max out at 4-5 services.

So, even if you played every service we're looking at something in the realm of $3500-$4500 per season. And since they won't have the need for tuba on every service, a more realistic number is probably closer to $3k, if that.

A pretty decent pro team plays in Rupp Arena.

It's only about 3 hours from Lexington to Bloomington, Indiana.

Now that is absolutely true. Why would that be, after the last two times he's taken teams in there? Here's a hint, it has nothing to do with the outcome of either game. It's pretty clear that once IU demonstrates they can provide a safe, sportsmanlike environment for it, the series will be renewed.

Heard from Yuki, there were 3 finalist. Yuki Onitsuka (yay CCM!), Gennie Clarkson (yay CCM!), and Beth (?). Instead of picking a winner, they elected to have all 3 play throughout the season. Perhaps as a trial? That's all I know.

Seems more and more orchestras are going the way of trial positions. It makes a lot of sense, then you can really see the personality of a person and how they fit in with the group. Good luck to all three finalists!

Trial? Really? Then is the position truly vacant?

I figured Skip Gray was probably just on sabbatical from the university and wanted the year off from the LPO as well. Or something like that. Has he actually resigned?

EDIT: A friend close to the situation tells me he has taken over as interim director of the school of music. What this means for the long term is apparently up in the air. The expectation is that he'll be back at the LPO next year.

Skip Gray has not resigned from the LPO. He is the new Interim Director of the University of Kentucky School of Music. Since he is very busy with that position this year, he is on sabbatical form the LPO and has lightened his teaching load with the UK Tuba/Euph Studio. Ryan Moore is assisting Dr. Gray as part-time Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium. Congrats to the 3 players helping out with the LPO this year. Have a great season!!
