My new 2145

Had a mw 2145 fall in my lap this wk way below market value.never knew how much these little things rocked! I'm thinking "baby Thor".missed that big bore piston low register this past year.thought I was just gonna flip it,but no can do.anybody playing one of these in a decent sizes(4-6 basses) orchestra? I just bet it will work...

My MW 2145 is rolling its way across Ontario and then Manitoba and then home courtesy of Greyhound. It has been looked after by Robert Munroe at Musicaid in London Ontario. Robert fixed a very cranky thumb ring, gave it a chemical bath, replaced a dented bottom bow guard and completely stripped and relacquered the horn. I cannot wait to see it and then get very busy learning those CC fingerings. After 35 years of BBb, I am sure it will not happen overnight. I did play the horn before sending it and it is a very sweet piece of work. I have had one four valve horn prior to this, a VMI 103 and it was not a pleasant experience for the horn or me.
This will be better!

One of the things that struck me about the large piston 2145 I owned was how relatively easy it was to play in tune. I tried a number of mouthpieces on it and liked the Parke Offenloch best for larger ensemble playing. I liked the 2145 but never loved it. I think the two biggest improvements would have been to make it a little larger and out of slightly thinner brass - wait a second, that is a MW 2000.
The original "small piston" that Sam P was involved with was probably a better horn for the quintet/smaller ensemble playing for which it was originally designed; going to the larger pistons made it play an sound like a bigger horn than it actually was.

P.S. I cut a little off the first slide, to make for a very in tune 5th partial D when pushed all the way in.

I played one that belonged to a guy I know a few years back. Very nice horn, probably my favorite size for a C tuba. That one also needed the first valve tubing cut down. I also found it a bit uncomfortable for me but whatever.

I checked that d.fine if all the way in...pitch is really quite good.same tendencies as the Thor.the bigvalves are an over all winner.many high dollar horns walking around with that valveset.not perfect,but a work-around available for most any problem.

A friend in college has a 2145. I can't remember which valve set it had, but I remember it being a fun horn.
