Thanks, I really like this pieceJ.c. Sherman wrote:The Frackenpohl Concertino written for Abe Torchinsky (sp?) is a fine little work well suited for contrabass tuba. The second movement is quite pretty.
It's also a good work if you're playing a concerto with a less than professional orchestra.

Re: Looking for the right Concerto
Take a look at the Concerto for tuba by Robert Jager. The piece has some good challenges and I spent about 6 months on it as a freshman in college. At the time I was still playing BBb and this worked very well as it really has some challenges with range, technique and rhythm, or at least it was challenging to me as a freshman in college. During my sophomore year I won two concerto competitions using this piece.
Otherr pieces to consider are the Gregson, Lebedev, Frackenpohl and V.Williams. Don’t let the key of the horn determine what to play or learn. Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to learn the whole piece at once, you can learn one mvt at time and perform them accordingly.
Good luck,

Dave Zerkel wrote a good article examining the solo repertoire of the contra-bass tuba. Check it out!
