I was looking through my notes from the Pokorny Seminar I attended last summer. Gene Pokorny had mentioned that when Floyd Cooley auditioned for the San Francisco Symphony, he showed up with only an F tuba (at least that's what I wrote on my notes!).
Does anyone know anything about this? Did he play all the 'contrabass' stuff on F, and what kind of horn did he have?

I had heard something similar years ago, but I fail to remember the specifics, it was either an F tuba, or 184... regardless, it was tiny.

At the time, maybe. Sumner Erickson was 18...Tony Kniffen almost matched Floyd.
