Grad assistantship - Baylor

Post by KentEshelman »

Hi Everyone,

I'll have an opening for a Master's graduate assistant in tuba or euphonium starting next fall (auditions this fall and spring). Duties include teaching lessons to music majors studying tuba/euphonium as their secondary instrument, teaching lessons to non-music majors, and assisting with tuba-euphonium ensemble and the tuba/euph portion of Low Brass Methods class. The assistantship covers full tuition and provides an annual stipend. (It's a good gig!)

At Baylor we refer to last year as the "year of the Bear" because of the success of our sports teams...but the brass area is excelling, too! Please feel free to contact me if you might be interested in audition or would like more information.

Best Regards,
Kent Eshelman

Warrior87,

The School of Music does have specific audition days (Jan. 19, Feb. 9, March 2), but as a graduate applicant you would also be welcome to come any time (i.e., a weekday so that you could observe some rehearsals, get a lesson, etc.) A recorded audition is acceptable if necessary, but a live audition would be much preferred...especially if distance is not a major obstacle (I see you're in Grand Prairie?).

I'm glad you're interested! Let's be in touch; feel free to give me a pm or email with further questions.

Thanks,
Kent Eshelman

Here are the entrance requirements for the Master of Music degree at Baylor:

Graduates of recognized four-year courses leading to a bachelor’s degree in music
may become candidates for the Master of Music degree. Students desiring to become
candidates for the degree must have the equivalent of the undergraduate major in music
at Baylor University in the field of concentration in which they wish to continue. Those
who lack courses prerequisite to graduate study may make up the undergraduate work, for
which graduate credit may be granted, provided the course work is at the 4000 level and
appropriate to the degree program. All students will take music theory and music history
diagnostic examinations. Appropriate remedial course work may be required.

Applicants for degrees with emphasis in performance, collaborative piano, piano
pedagogy, or the performance option of church music must audition (in person or submit a video
recording of a recent performance) with repertoire of at least senior recital level. A repertoire
list must be submitted for evaluation at the time of the audition.

Ideally the audition would include a substantial solo work like a sonata or concerto (or at least a couple movements of one), a shorter solo work of a contrasting musical style, and about 5 orchestra/band excerpts. We'll also ask for some sightreading.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
