I've got gas

Post by circusboy »

. . . LP (propane) gas, to be exact.

I know that the natural gas provided by cities to consumers for heat, etc., can speed up the tarnishing of a silver-plated horn. I've just moved to a place outside of the city and will be using LP gas. Will this have the same effect on my silver horn? Do I still need to keep in in its case all the time?

Thanks.

... it looks like the answers to your questions are "yes".

Silver will tarnish with or without being exposed to a gas flame. There are enough chemicals in any atmosphere to promote silver tarnish. It's more of a matter of HOW FAST it will tarnish. My 'Jumbo' has been sitting on a stand in my music room all summer and hasn't been exposed to a gas flame... and still could use a good polishing.
