MW 2145

Post by Ace »

It is the best CC tuba I have owned. It is now in the capable hands of a student at Univ of North Texas. When I owned it , I used it in a 65 piece symphony orchestra. It was more than adequate, even for Tchaik, Mahler, Hindemith, Bruckner, R. Strauss, Shostakovich, etc. These horns are now quite expensive because of the dollar/Euro differential. Consider higher quality Czech or Chinese horns if money is a problem. Or, good used horns.

How about a Conn 52/54/56J?
What will you choose/and what's the difference between these horns?

I tried the 2145 side by side with a Conn 50-something J. The Conn made a bit more bass, but the 2145 had a much prettier tone quality.

Last month, I set out on the adventure of purchasing a new (used) tuba. I took the trip to Baltimore Brass Company to play every CC tuba he had in stock. Along with all the tubas there, I've also played on a PT-4P,a PT-6P, a MW 2155, a Yamaha 822, and a Miraphone 1291. Out of all of these tubas, the 2145 was my favorite, and consequently what I bought. If you're looking for a medium sized horn to use in both chamber work and ensemble work, plus solo, this horn is the absolute best. The sound of these tubas is so dark and rich, it is amazing. The openness is far better than anything I've ever played, including other Meinl Weston tubas. Intonation is good as well.

Needless to say, I love the 2145!

I got my 2155 in August and love it. If you find a good deal on one jump on it. You won't regreat it.

when i tried the 21 series (2145, 2155, 2165), the 2145 i thought was too small, the 2165 was way too big, but the 2155 played just right. Play all three and see what you like the best, they all have their ups and downs. and don't forget about the 2000. If it's too expensive for you, i still think you should just sit down and play it. It's the best horn i think i've ever played, and i really like my Miraphone 1291.

To answer your question about the Conns...
I hated them all. I've heard that they are very inconsistent and if you finally find a good one that you like, buy it, because word has it that they are great horns, if you find a good one.
