Solo works to play for church services

I am looking to play some solo works for tuba in church; I already performed the Marcello Sonata in F Major. I have more Baroque transcriptions, but what you would recommend that is not Baroque for a church service on sunday?

I've never played a tuba solo in church, but I think the "Six Studies in English Folks Song" would fit the "mood" nicely. They're simple, and hey, they're based on music that was once sung! And they don't take a great amount of effort to work up nicely.

Take an Eb tuba and play the Haydn trumpet concerto two octaves down. Really. 1st movement: prelude; 2nd movement: offertory; 3rd movement: postlude.

It is at your discretion as to take the run of concert eb up to high concert db in the 1st movement down an octave.

I have looked everywhere for Chorale Prelude by AD Schmutz. Can anyone help me with a source for this? JW Pepper indicates their supplier no longer has it. I also read an obituary that Mr. Schmutz passed away last February.

My personal opinion of what would be appropriate for use during a worship service is to take a vocal piece that is well-known and well-loved by the particular congregation and perform it in the appropriate octave.

But I'm probably more conservative than most on this board about the purposes of music in a worship service . . .

Is your intention to perform or to lead the congregation in worship? If the latter, heed Uncle Buck's advice. Otherwise play what you want. Some of the most moving and appropriate music I ever heard in my church was Tim Northcutt, now low brass instructor at Cincinatti Conservatory, doing old familiar hymn settings with or without a piano accompanyment. He would typically play the first verse in the middle octave and simply kick it up an octave and add a slight bit of tasteful improvisation on the second. It's been 20 years but I still get chill bumps. That experience was the primary reason I decided to double on tuba.

Go to TubaStudio.com and scroll down to "On A Spring Morning" and "Sunrise." There are others on the site that will work too, but these two do not require an extreme range, were written by Sanae Kanda for Easter Services I perform for each year, and have gone over great with the congregations I've performed them for. There is nothing inherently "religious" about them, just pieces that work well in a church setting. (I've also included them in a recital.)

There are sound clips of both pieces on the site.
