My favorite performance of this work is not on disc, but in my memory. It was the stunning live performance here in Berkeley many years ago of the Berkeley Symphony conducted by the great conductor, Kent Nagano. Nagano now has gone on to bigger things but comes back to town every now and then to see old friends.

I'm certainly not going to argue against BPO and Don at the top of the heap, but Cincinnati with Mike Thornton should be on the short-list. Late 90s, I think (?)

Cincinnati is excellent. I'll go looking for BPO.

Cincinnati, done in 1993. Bar none. The recording quality is impeccable. The playing is otherworldly. I have several recordings of the piece, including a bootleg or two. Nothing compares to the Cincinnati recording. The one that comes closest is the Philharmonia.
