Second Line Charts?

Startin' a New Orleans Brass Band Band here in Jersey. Anyone know where I can get some charts? And yes, some of us will be arranging our own, but I just thought a jumping off place would be nice.

You might try contacting the Somerville (Boston area) Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band http://www.slsaps.org/index.html - they have a very good PDF collection of traditional and contemporary New Orleans Brass Band basic charts (with some mp3s so you can hear how they sound.)

I totally concur with Bloke's comments, but getting a bass drummer who can feel that 2nd Line Beat is the hardest part. I know many very proficient drummers who just cannot do it!
I think it really helps to grow up saturated in New Orleans music (including all of the R&B, Funk and early R&R as well as Jazz and Blues.)

If you're going to play funerals, you'll need "Flee As A Bird" by George Southwell, "Westlawn Dirge" by Karl L. King and the old Carl Fisher QS arrangement of the Chopin Funeral March. Remember, dirges up to the cemetery, and "up" tunes on the way back to town.

The King dirge is in the back of "Trouper's Favorite" a great little band book still in print at Barnhouse.

Most of the bands I ever did that stuff with (Dutch Eithoven in Orlando and some of the guys in NOLA) most of it was head charts.

Most brass band players in New Orleans learn these tunes when they're kids - even today.

Find the Dirty Dozen Brass Album "Funeral For a Friend", dedicated to Tuba Fats Lacine. They have a lot of guests on it, especially vocals, but it's a good representation of how the contemporary style melds with the hard tradition. Great album.
