Free working TVs

I have been trying to give away two working TVs on Freecycle and Craigslist in the DC area.

Those sources, especially Craigslist, have dozens of free TVs listed with no takers. Apparently everyone wants a new flat screen instead of an older, heavier, free tv.

Kind of offends my sense of personal thriftiness, as well as general conservation.

Hey Dean: I made oodles of phone calls to get rid a good older upright piano. (Gerhardt/Heinzman)
Finally found someone who agreed to take it if i paid to move it to his house.
So i did. 200.bucks. Cash. 3 men and a truck. Beats paying 425. to have a piano mover take it away as 'disposal'
This is the new , improved world we live in. Too much luxury for some and not enough food
and clean water for many more.

My wife and I have been married for over 5 years now and we've had two TVs in that time, both were given to us by someone else. We know we're poor! We have no problem taking free stuff off of other peoples' hands! The one we have in our living room has a "flat screen" (all the stuff behind it isn't so flat....) but the screen is flat!

My son just moved from Houston with his not so flat 55 inch projection TV. When he set it up the projection bulb was out so he ordered a new one. The bulb and shipping was more than the TV was worth. Fortunately his company paid to move it or he would really be in the hole. But, I have a 4 year old 1080P flat screen that is worth close to nothing. Stuff just doesn't hold it's value anymore, 'cept of course Tubas.

I forget what movie it was, but this reminds me of a scene in a poor school where a student was complaining to a teacher:

Kid: We need new weights. These are old and dirty.
Teacher: Are they still heavy?

You can have the fanciest TV in the world. Doesn't make the stuff you watch any better.

Have you read where the Canadians have just been slammed with another tax? This time... it's a 'recycling tax' that's added to the purchase of new electronics. The extra dough is supposed to be used to research and implement new ways to deal with the hazardous materials.
