Slur across partials

Post by sailn2ba »

Notation is rapid slur of eighth notes between F at bottom of the B.C. and G on the first line, for 10 beats. Using a BBb horn (valves open to 12, repeated 10x ) I am having difficulty getting the tones clean across the phrase. It feels like I'm having to lip slur between partials. Second line Bb to 2nd space C is similar, but easier. I encounter this in the Panofka vocalize #9.

Why is it that I (apparently) have to change partials across a single tonal step?

Ha!, as soon as I posted, I realized that it's because the valves are adding tubing length to the partial I'm lipping. The 12 valves are being added to the next higher partial (Bb in this case).

There is a little "bump" there between the notes but it should be easy with a little practice. If you want to do it more easily just use 1&3 for the F and just 3rd valve for the G. Problem solved. Just double check the tuning. 3rd valve G may tend to be just a tad low.

Enjoy!

Gunther Schuller writes very well on this topic in his old book from Oxford University Press. As I remember it the title is Horn Technique.

In very short GS considers shift of partials as points of resistance to be managed by means of intensified air supply.

You might also want to try a legato tongue instead of a slur. This seems to work especially well for those how double on trombone.
