Everyone support Lee and buy his tubas as they become available. He will be producing them to order and they will not be cheap. But I bet they will be very decent playing horns. Lee posted his announcement in the Sponsors' Section. It looks like a great new/revived CC tuba is in the works!

Ian... as I read Lee's post... I understood that he bought the tooling/parts/and such 'lock, stock, & barrel' and is going to be focused on putting the horns together with a little more care than the factory may have. I totally agree with Lee when he implies that 'most all tubas have assembly problems'. I have yet to take apart ANY tuba that didn't exhibit some form of quirk that could have made it play at less than 100%.

It appears to me that Lee's horns will be built to order ... NOT to individual owner specifications.

I played a pep band gig on sousaphone last night. The valves froze in about 3 minutes and kept on freezing every 30 seconds or so. During half-time, I put the horn down on the ground and stood by a heater. When I picked up the horn, the condensation inside had totally frozen up and caused a complete blockage of the first valve slide. It was about -12°C/10°F with the windchill.

Today's forecast high(here) is 64 degrees. It is a bit chilly. I feel your pain.

In conditions like that... it would be very difficult for me to call it a 'pep band'!

I pretty much modded/customized my old King raincatcher Eb sousa. Someone inquired about the horn some days ago, but I explained the playability (mostly intonation) issues with the horn. So he thought about it and lost interest. But that got ME interested in it again. It had been sitting in the corner of my game/laundry room collecting dust for about 2 1/2 years now. I put off doing anything to the horn as it is historical. But it was only good for TubaChristmas or in a museum. And I only had one or two really low-ball offers when I had it for sale over a year ago on CL. It deserved more than that.....so I modded it

I thought, heck why not, as I have had mods done on my other vintage tubas. I had a plan. So anyway I shortened/cut the main tuning slide 1.25" and flipped it in an upward position so I can move it while in play. There was LOTS of thinking and looking at HOW I would do this successfully, but I finally got it done. I had a bitch of a time unsoldering all those close braces and refitting/reshaping tube ends with my very limited tools.

Then I shortened/cut the first valve slide to bring the FLAT 3rd partial C up to pitch. I cut about 1.25" from the slide ends. Too much to go into detail here, but just glad I got it done. Still need to get the slide moving faster/smoother, but that can wait.

The raincatcher still has wonky pitch, but at least it is manageable now, and will be quite nice once I get that main slide fast n slick. It sounds too good to just sit in some museum and/or be sold for cheap, so that's why I customized it and will finally use it for various (likely outdoor) gigs.
