Hurricane...
Time for another hurricane in NYC. Silly me, I thought living here meant not having to deal with this any more.
Good luck and stay safe everyone!

Re: Hurricane...
You can get the latest National Weather Service info from NOAA here. It would be nice if it turned out to be just a moderate tropical storm, but right now it doesn't appear to be the case.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Wouldn't THAT be a big disappointment for the 'talking heads' on the weather programs!gwwilk wrote:....It would be nice if it turned out to be just a moderate tropical storm.....

Because someone has to stay home and protect our belongings from the foraging, roving bands of conductors that will no doubt be rioting in the streets... remember Katrina!bloke wrote:I generally don't take 'vacations', but it seems like most other people do. ...Why not take them when you can't go to work and when staying at home will be miserable?

The NWS had said last year that they were going to be more blunt with their wording...but wow, that is intense. Chris Christie has been blunt too, as usual
Here in Manhattan, the flooding seems like the biggest threat. Personally, knock on wood, I think I will be ok. And if I am, I hope that can translate to being able to help someone else who needs it.

Re: Hurricane...
The good news - we have no more trees left on our property thanks to past storms. The bad news - there's a cluster of oaks on my property line, belonging to my neighbor, that lean toward my master bedroom. I'm not sleeping there tonight .
Right now, we're getting 30 mph steady wind with gusts to 50 or 60. Later today and into tomorrow, we're supposed to get 80 mph gusts. We're bound to lose power at some point. If we lose it for a few days or more, schools will remain closed. If schools remain closed, our Day of Tuba or Euphonium event will be postponed or cancelled.
This is just what I need. It's my last DTE event, as we'll be moving to Cedar Park Texas in Dec. I hope we get through this without an oak tree landing on my soon to be sold house.
Be safe north easterners!

They could just lash everything in New Jersey to Chris Christie to keep from being blown away!bort wrote:..... Chris Christie has been blunt too, as usual....

Last year, hurricane Irene hit on my wife's birthday. This year, hurricane Sandy is hitting on my birthday (the 30th).

Re: Hurricane...
Boy, I'm glad I live in the midwest where we don't have to worry about hurricanes. Tornadoes are terrible to be sure (luckily I've never even been anywhere near one), but they don't seem to have as wide-spread of an impact as hurricanes. Good luck to everyone over there.

Re: Hurricane...
Olds: my wife made French toast this morning. Guilty as charged. I have dinner on the gas stove and am looking forward to a feast. Possibly a beer even. We did have to evacuate (again) but are safe and sound at my wife's studio, sleeping on the floor.
My kid is snoring even as the windows are shaking. Good times, work has been canceled today and tomorrow.

Re: Hurricane...
Starting to flood over here. I am on the 6th floor, so I am ok, but the water is close to my building now. I guess this is to be expected, i live in the middle of the East River.

Power out here. Cell still up. Making brownies in the gas oven and trying to relax. Just a little worried about the fridge. Mostly the milk for my daughter.

All is well in my section of NJ, though not so much in nearby areas. Hoboken and parts of Jersey City are underwater. Very, very glad there is a 300 ft. cliff between me and the Hudson River!
Power is out, but otherwise we're fine.

Re: Hurricane...
Today is my birthday. My wife regularly makes a ton of food and freezes it. Power is still out, so time to start cooking everything before it goes bad. Happy birthday to me... Sorta.
Hope everyone in LI and Jersey is ok!

Re: Hurricane...
Could have been worse in Baltimore- we had a lot of wind, some trees down, some power failures, but Irene and Isabel were worse.
