Squeeky corks on a mute

Post by chronolith »

I have a Trumcor mute that sounds wonderful in my big horn. However when I put the mute in or take it out there is the sound of a patrol car next to a suddenly appearing doughnut stand.

Going to experiment with scotch on contact points for now, but hoping someone has a few ideas to keep those mute changes quiet.

Thanks in advance.

A tiny amount of petroleum-based grease rubbed into the corks will work. Water-soluble solutions work until they evaporate.

I also use a Trumcor mute with my CC tuba, and the thing that completely got rid of the squeaking was putting a long strip of duct tape on each cork. If you want to make it match, find a roll of black duct tape and call it a day.

Rub the corks with a bar of DRY soap. Never gets anything greasy and never squeaks again!

Thank you Dr. Murrow. That's going to be my plan.

For the recent concert I squeeked by :D with some scotch tape on the contact points.
