Free Christmas Music

I like Wade’s offering of Christmas carols set for 4 brasses (which doesn’t exclude a few pranks being pulled). It hits right into the core of the American Christmas repertory. I come from another country with different traditions.

The Danish carols may have next to none recognition factor in the US aside from the areas with Danish or Nordic ímmigrants (or rather their descendants). Yet the somewhat different melodies and harmonies will work well for groups/ensembles, which provide filler music during church liturgies.

I also have two editions of All People that on Earth do Dwell. The 2012-edition is the more flexible one, when it comes to instrumentation, and it hold 6 rather than 5 settings covering several centuries of music history. A couple of the versions have quite challenging bass lines.

Enatus est Emanuel in a setting by Michael Praetorius may be performed from quartets through larger ensembles. It has call and response elements.

The use of cornet and flugelhorn is a very nice trait fitting the low conical brasses well.

‘I denne søde juletid’ was a favourite of my late father. And you even got the letter ø right in the titles.

You play ‘Det kimer nu til julefest’ without the burden of knowing the performance tradition here. Which leads to a much more fluent performance than the traditional treading a bit heavy on all beats. Very musically done.
