Unusual horn in Rose Parade

Post by David Richoux »

I was watching the coverage (late, as usual - thank you TIVO!) and saw a large band from El Salvador in the parade. There looked to be something like a high bell circular Mellophone, or something in the mid-range of marching horns. There were a few normal folded euphoniums, but these were different!

I tried watching some video clips and looked at some Google images but this was the only close shot:

.

This video  has some distracting views - just a few seconds of the horn in question.

Any ideas?

Here's a better look:

It's a Holton MH102 Bb marching horn.

Thanks! I'm going to look for one of those - it woud be great for one band I am in.

However, at least one owner was not too pleased with his.

He gave it a grade of "A"?

What do you call such large percussion and drum section? Latin gang bang?

The valve tubing wrap is quite different, the final bell angle is different, and the ones the Salvadorans are using don't seem to have screw-on bells. Are you sure that's the same?

The sample above is a Holton M-100 rather than the MH-102 shown below here.

There also have been Chinese copies of the Holton concept. The Holtons have that emblem in the main tuning slide’s stay.
