Great stuff to hear in TX

Post by leehipp »

I've noticed an awful lot of fellow Texans on this list (as well as former) so I thought many of you may be interested in some of the great concerts coming up this Spring around the state.

The rest of you are invited as well. I'm sure there are some other noteworthy University concerts to hear as well, maybe someone can add those.

- Lee (I know I'll be making some extra trips to Dallas and Houston)

Ft. Worth Symphony - Ed Jones, tuba
2/25-27 Shostakovich, Sym. #9

Dallas Symphony - Matt Good, tuba
3/17-20 Bruckner, Sym. #7
3/31, 4/1-2 Strauss, Zarathustra

Houston Symphony - David Kirk, tuba
4/16-18 Shostakovich, Sym. #15
5/7-9 Prokofiev, Alexander Nevsky w/ film

San Antonio Symphony - Lee Hipp, tuba
3/4-5 Mussorgsky/Ravel, Pictures at an Exhibition
3/25-26 Prokofiev, Romeo and Juliet Suite
4/8-10 Holst, The Planets (with images from Mariner 10, Vikings I & II, Magellan, Voyagers I & II and the Hubble Space Telescope)
5/6-7 Wagner, Flying Dutchman Ov. and Brahms, Sym. #2

I can't believe i am going to say this but " I actually wish I lived in Tx (for the spring only) just to have that kind of line-up. Hey Lee, are you guys making any trips out east (NYC metro area?) The Holst looks great, I'd like to see that if you are in the area.

Major change in the Dallas Symphony program for the March17th-20th concerts. We are now peforming:

Bruckner: Symphony #9

This has been rather disappointing change for the DSO. :( The Ninth is still an incredible piece, but we were looking forward to doing the 7th with Claus Peter Flor.

I'll be moving to the Houston area this spring and I look forward the all of the "tuba-action in Texas. Just recently I heard the Houston Symphony brass do several Gabrieli selections. It was very impressive, to say the least.
