nice looking tuba. Is it just the pics, or is the bell a little more "stovepipe" than most that size?

I would describe the bell of these horns as being 'stovepipe'. The horn is about 42 1/2 from the end of the bell to the keel.

Are the valve caps factory? Every pre-PT I've seen/owned has lacked the cap engravings.

I've owned 6 tubas in the past year and spent too much time on this forum, I didn't know CROWN was a B&S clone. How would the average player know that CROWN is a potentially better tuba than a Yamaha?

I'll take exception on the 641s....

Although they are perhaps a little more stiff "out of the box", with a little tweaking (maybe not everyone's cup of tea) 641s can absolutely rock the house... like an in-tune Alex BBb.

Mine's now known as "the weapon". The only thing I haven't "tweaked" is the sharp high G and Ab. But they're both pull-able... and my first is vented.

I find these pictured instruments a little on the "cluncky" side. Less refined assembly, noisy, easily damaged.

Too each their own, I guess.

I should have been more specific; in his case, it would be his home / church / "concert and contest" instrument. The school provides school instruments.

Admittedly, the horizontal tuning slide B&S BBb rotary tubas' 4th valve tubing wrap is a disaster-waiting-to-happen in the hands of dope-headed schoolboys

Even if you're careful they're still easy to dent. I had Baltimore Brass put a guard on mine (sorry bloke, too much travel time to get to your shop ).

I am not a big Yamaha fan, but I kinda like the 641 rotary BBb. Most people here don't seem to like them for some reason and would rather have a Miraphone 186. But I much prefer the sound and low register of the YBB 641. It's kinda like the M-W 25 BBb (another model I like many ppl don't like), but with a better low range.
IMO, the 641 does not suffer from the bland 'vanilla' sound most Yammy's have; rather, it sounds much more like a rotary M-W and some Alex's. Most ppl don't like em' prolly because they do not have the most even response & pitch.

The B&S-made 'Crown' has been re-listed. Would be a great starter/all-around BBb tuba. Someone should snap this up If I had the money...
