Tuba mouthpiece on Trombone

Post by ajacobus »

Hey everyone,

I've always wanted to learn how to play a trombone, for shits and giggles, and yesterday I went ahead and bought a pBone as it's very inexpensive and can teach me the basics. The pBone only takes a small shank mouthpiece, and after having played the tuba for 17 years now.. my chops are saying: NO WAY!

Does anyone have any recommendations or know of a company that makes tuba sized rim mouthpieces with a small trombone shank? I'm aiming for getting the largest mouthpiece with a small shank, but I know there are hybrids out there that have tuba sized mouthpieces that fit into other instruments..

Thanks!

The only way I know of for you could get such a beast would be by contacting Doug Elliott and getting one of his set-ups.

However, I don't know how effective a really large mouthpiece will sound a a really small horn.

Kanstul made some George Roberts mouthpieces in small shank. I have one somewhere in the shop. It's about a Bach 1.25G or 1.5G size. That being said, I don't imagine it's a great match for a pBone. But you can call the shop and have one of the boys play test it for you.

Best,

Well done! But as much as the mouthpiece clearly shines in this application, I can't help thinking it's kind of a waste of money for the OP. The mouthpiece that comes with hasn't been very popular, but something like a Kelly 6½ AL in a matching color is going to be a fraction of the price and more fun in the long run, that's just my opinion.

Steve, how do you think it'd work in a small shank euph?

If the OP really wants what he was asking for, a tuba rim on a small shank trombone mouthpiece, I do make it and it does work. The only problem right now is that I'm out on tour for a month. If you're still interested get back to me later. I would be happy to put it together and play it for you over the phone to prove to you that it works.

I have played a trombone that would accept a tuba mouthpiece, and the sound was not very good, the facility worse. Better to take your time.
