2012 was our inaugural year, and we kicked it off in style with 25 advanced brass students from major institutions including Curtis, Eastman, Rice, Mannes, USC, Baylor, University of Michigan, Oberlin, and many more. We have significant scholarship opportunities and are focused on accepting a higher percentage of pre-formed groups this summer.
SBS participants will have an intensive experience featuring business/entrepreneurial classes, numerous brass quintet performances, and a large brass ensemble that starts with orchestral rep and ends each session with performances in venues across Northern Michigan. SBS students receive weekly lessons, quintet coachings twice a week, business/entrepreneurial classes twice a week, and 6 large brass coachings each session. In addition, each brass quintet will perform 4-5 times a session, and the large brass ensemble will perform 3 times per session.
The faculty for SBS 2013 are:
* Scott Thornburg, trumpet
* Brian Buerkle, trumpet
* Aaron Brant, horn
* John Rutherford, trombone
* Jacob Cameron, tuba
The seminar sessions are focused on topics from branding/marketing a group to finding your way in the world of freelancing. We pride ourselves on preparing the SBS participants to be out in the brave new world of the arts and on the cutting edge of entrepreneurial training.
