I have a ~2 year old HP laptop, I need to add some RAM to it. I know what kind I need (ddr3 pc3-10600)... but does it matter at all what *brand* of RAM to use? Am I better off buying from HP, or just as good to buy whatever is cheapest on eBay?

20 years ago 1meg ram was $100 and the 8meg I had in my 486 made it pretty expensive but top line gear. There was actually a "world wide shortage" of memory. Must be why I forget so much.
I've always had very good luck with Crucial memory. They are the consumer-facing side of Micron, one of the biggest memory chip makers. Their web site is easy to deal with to select the correct memory, and their prices tend to be decent.
The brand does not matter. Use crucial.com to figure out what type of RAM you need and how many slots your computer has. Looks like you already did that. Then find the brand on Newegg with the best reviews/price. I usually buy cheap but highly rated stuff. I've NEVER had a problem going that route. I just built a new home server and bought the cheapest (but highly rated) 16GB (2x 8GB) desktop RAM chips I could find that would work with my motherboard. They are working great.
I think every person who has ever upgraded computer equipment has a drawer or box with old memory chips. It's a shame to have so much memory doing nothing.
