Yamaha YCB-822S, good or bad?

Post by redstripe2 »

I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on the Yamaha YCB-822S?

It's a good horn. It has many characteristics of the 822 F tuba including good intonation and response. Another aspect of Yamaha's in general is that they record better than they sound in person, I don't know why that it but I've noticed it with Yamaha trumpets, trombones and tubas. The live sound is a little too covered for my taste but with the right mouthpiece it carries well. At the right price, these horns are a great value.

The F tuba played by the wrong person sounds like pure sine wave. Great horn…but you have to work very hard to make it sound like a tuba.

Nice horns, but every one I tried I remarked "love it... just have to cut the third valve slide".

I didn't like the way the orientation of the valves made my wrist have to bend, but that wasn't on the S model.
