If the 51D just kind of barely fits into the receiver, it might work in a European shank. If it fits normally into the small shank, might not work in the larger pipe, but you'll just have to try it. Search on Google for a comparison of shank diameters and receiver diameters. Bound to turn up on the net somewhere I would hope!

I played a 51D for a long time and think it's a good all-around choice for euphonium.

I don't think Schilke sells euro/med/Willson shank mouthpieces, only small/tenor and large/bass.

I would not try to use a small shank in an instrument designed for a euro shank. Spend the $25.

The following make euro shank mouthpieces:
Denis Wick SM series (large, euro, or small/baritone)
DEG Alterna (see wwbw.com, $25)

Sorry, I didn't see the euro shank on the Schilke web site so I assumed....
