Taj Mahal and 10 tubas & Sousaphones at Jazz Fest
I didn't get to NOLA this year, so I missed this show... Dang!

(and even Taj got the Sousaphone origin story a bit wrong - or the reporter did.)

I am pretty sure David Silverman is the one in the vest, behind the music stand. He usually wears a vest.
Full line-up (not in photo order)
Howard Johnson, Joseph Daley, Earl McIntyre, Bob Stewart, Kirk Joseph, Ben Jaffe, Phil Frazier, David Silverman, Satoru Ohashi, Jon Gross

That looked like great fun. Going through the slideshow on your link two things struck me.
One - I had no idea Pete Fountain was still alive - how great is that - he looked good.
The second - why in the heck was stupid Hall and Oates there??? Everybody else looked like real musicians.

Jazz Fest always has "Ringers" - some well known act(s) that most nobody really can figure out why they are there. I think it may be more for the locals who see the local big name acts all year, so the festival brings in Hall & Oats or Steely Dan kind of performers to satisfy them. In 2012 it was The Eagles; 2011 Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp and Kid Rock...

Yah, it's not to worry... the "local" vibe is still there. I played there a few years ago with the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars and our set was literally simultaneous with both huge headliners Bon Jovi and Kings of Leon, but our area was still completely packed with thousands of people and the crowd was amazing. JazzFest is such an incredible event...David Richoux wrote:Jazz Fest always has "Ringers" - some well known act(s) that most nobody really can figure out why they are there. It's a beautiful old HN White Eb. It originally only had 3 valves, but Earl had a 4th installed (one that Don Butterfield had had cut off of one of his instruments).jwjeffrey wrote:Can somebody tell me what the hell Earl McIntyre is playing?Looks like an old york.

Pretty sure Bob's Yamaha is in BBb. I know the other guy ('lead' player; I forget his name) plays this homebrew F:jwjeffrey wrote: Thanks for the info!
