Does someone else have control of my computer?

Post by tbn.al »

I checked the Carol J. post a few minutes ago and noticed the words "to open" looked like a link in a post I made a few days ago. I clicked on the link and found a website I had never heard of and never visited before. How did that happen? One you click on it, it goes away until you leave this website and return and There it is again. Any ideas? Here is the link to the Carol J thread. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=55684" target="_blank

I have no idea what happened in your case. A hyperlink appearing and disappearing is a bit weird. That being said, I discussed bulletin board security with a coworker who owns and operates 2 truck boards. He said that there are a number of known vulnerabilities (easily found on Google) for various BB's including phpbb. One thing he said that was smart of the TubeNet folks was that they have hidden exactly which version of phpbb they are using. That makes it harder for bb hackers.

I'm not really up on computer stuff, but I've noticed when I dial in on this board that a scrolling ad from Musicians Friend on the right side of my screen shows instruments that I have looked at on their website. Creepy.

By the way Joe, the words "the email" in your signature form a link now. When you click on it you don't get Mid-South.

Ok. I went into Internet Explorer and reset the security from med-high to high. The links disappeared and I got a message that an add on for this website failed to load. I think that may mean that the website has added something that I foiled by upping my security setting.

Check in your browser and see what add-ons or extensions are currently installed or enabled. Even some legit websites seem to be trying to install add-ons (not automatically, but when it asks, sometimes the options are confusing... am I clicking a box to tell them its ok? Or not ok?)

I did go into IE and there are not any add ons that seem inappropriate. I did find something from Sweetpacks that I got rid of.

I think I found it. I just removed a program called Supreme Savings and the links disappeared. I don't have any idea where that came from but it is now gone! Thanks for the help.

Good!

Those things are really annoying... I've only found them before by noticing that my browser's home page was all messed up. What a pain!

Interestingly, after I removed it a warning came up on Norton about a program called dns basic attempting to load. Norton stopped it and requested a restart, which I did. Evidently it had been hiding in there for some time and Norton saw it only when it tried to reload. This may have all been a part of that terrible issue I had last month with the failure of McAfee and the ransomware Trojan. I have also noticed that my back arrows have begun working again. That has also been a recent problem. Maybe I'm all fixed now. I am convinced that someone had at least partial control without my knowledge, maybe for over a month now.

"Supreme Savings Coupon" is BHO (browser helper object) for IE, FF and Chrome but is Adware or considered Malware. Just deleting the program may not be enough. Here's a link with more information and instructions on how to completely remove it (by MalwareBytes, a FREE safe Malware removal tool):
