I mean, not that I'd do that within an ensemble and all. I was just giving an example.

Sure.
Anyways, guys, been reading a bunch of crap on how a contra bugle sounds better then a sousaphone. Mainly because the sound is more controlled and not so lazy and spready. While that's somewhat true...don't you guys think if the player is good enough they can control the sound that comes on of a Sousa and refrain it from become spready?
I honestly sousaphones can sound beautiful too--if the player has the skill.

Have you ever heard a group of this many sousaphones (16) sound as good?
I know a lot of it has to do with the ability of each individual player, but as a group these guys define the term playing
"in unison" Carolina Crown strives for perfection, so it's no wonder they sound so good.

My ears tell me that the contras sound better

This is the BEST sound I have ever heard from a band

Until the farting starts I like the fast playing very much.
What is the music? To my ears it could have been a string bass line by Beethoven.
The tuning sequence isn't perfect, but still tells of a very well taught ensemble.

I see, so basically each of them have their disadvantages and advantages of using them yes?
And Carolina crown is really good, but phantom regiment and BD are better IMO.

OK I finally found a good video of sousaphones playing LOUD & still sounding like tubas, much of the playing is
even in the lower range & this recording is from the stands.

Might have sounded a bit better had they all played the same note (in tune) at the same time (or when they were supposed to).TubaMusikMann wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrfQFgbQp1E" target="_blank

That 'wall of sound' is not blat, blat, blat.

Re: Edgy (Marching Band) Sousaphone Sound
I see where still posting here. Haha.
Anyways, had another practice session last night, kept it short because it was getting late and didn't want to disturb the neighbors
Anyways, getting better, I found my self experimenting with different embouchures for different songs so I can get the location and not miss the note(FF and louder).
Not bad. I have been recording my self too. These are just audio recordings on my phone so I can listen to how I sound after I'm done. Since I can't get those on here for y'all to listen to...I'll have to make a YouTube video. I'll have the video on here later today I hope.

Yeah. This is sort of a fun thread despite all of the controversy. Here is a gadget I fiddle with once in a while when I want to get many different sounds without having to work too hard:Tuboss2 wrote:I see we're still posting here. Haha....

Of course, it's difficult to haul around sound equipment on a football field!

Re: Edgy (Marching Band) Sousaphone Sound
Years ago, someone on the board (I think it may have been DP) described what a Sousaphone should sound like. As I recall, the words were "pillowy" and "blossomy". I think that was an excellent description.TubaMusikMann wrote:You just hit the nail right on the head!!When did that sort of playing start to become: A) acceptable B) desirable?
It sounds like sh*t to me..........Nothing short of overblown & DISTORTED![]()
Good tone should be first & foremost!!! Playing loud should still be done within that tonal range.
Overblowing a sousaphone (like in these youtube videos) makes a giant "kazoo sound" Doesn't even
sound like a sousaphone any longer![]()
Maybe I'm just old school, when it was about music..........and not just loud noise
The concept of blatty edginess in this thread is disturbing to me as a musician.
