My wife and I watched "Capitol Fourth" last night and it was excellent. The orchestra sounded great and trumpet soloist Chris Martin did a great job. I loved his tone and subtle use of vibrato in playing John Williams' music from 'Lincoln'. In reading Chris Martin's bio I see that he was a student of Larry Back - now retired from Atlanta symphony and owner/operator of LSCO who makes the excellent leather guards that some of us use on our instruments.
The only part of the concert we didn't much care for was Barry Manilow's singing. I wonder if their was a problem with his monitor ear piece as he was off key sometimes. Great concert overall.

Agreed. My wife and I also watched Capitol 4th and both of us were commenting on the quality of the singers, as we do every year. Considering Neil Diamond is a couple years older than Barry, we were both enjoying and appreciating how well he performed. Overall I would call that a pretty good concert. The orchestra sounded great, Steve D. was clearly audible on our sound system during 1812 and sounded really good.Curmudgeon wrote:To us, he also embarrassed himself by being critical of fans during his walk through the crowd. Seems like he expect a trained singer every time he stuck that microphone in their face. He should sung along with them and not made faces when they didn't perform up to his expectations. I think that he may have lost a few more fans from that generation of folks that remembered him fondly.
I also want to send a shout out to all the folks in Boston. We really missed the broadcast of the Pops this year, and we're both speculating on why the powers that be chose not to broadcast this year's performance. Especially after the bombings, we figured it would be a pretty emotional concert to enjoy. Imagine our disappointment when we read that the performance was only being broadcast locally...
My opinion for what it's worth...
