Information on Adolf Moser? Photo added
I'm trying to find out info on and photos of Adolf Moser, the tubist in the Cleveland Orchestra from 1928-1950. He may have also played in the New York Phil in 1927. I suspect that the Sander CC that I have may have been his. Inquiring minds want to know

Sam,
Cleveland has a fairly exhaustive archive. I'd bet they could come up with something for you.

J.c.Sherman and I both live in Cleveland. J.c. studied with Ron Bishop and is more of an authority on Cleveland history than I am. On the other hand, I am going to be in the Cleveland Institute of Music library next week, and I will look then if someone does not beat me to the draw.

Here's a photo of Adolf Moser from the Cleveland Orchestra Archives. He's obviously not playing the Sander CC that I have. Can anyone identify this horn. I believe it may be a CC. My bet is that this is a fairly late picture based on how old he appears to be in it. Perhaps he played on my Sander earlier in his career?

Looks like an Alex, especially the thumb ring. Kind of odd the engraving is off to the right on the bell.Sam Gnagey wrote:Here's a photo of Adolf Moser from the Cleveland Orchestra Archives. Everyone knows that the engraving to the front causes an emphasis in the antinodal structure which results in
meh...I can't even finish it. Too much going on, and the scenario is a little too far-fetched. But, now, this is going to be found through Google and likely become gospel in a couple of weeks.

Looks a whole lot like an Alex BBb.

I think Dave's observation of the horn as Alexander is on the mark. If you look at the 163 CC you will note that it has much the same configuration of branches and valve length tubing. I'm certain that the Moser horn is a CC. Also take note of the spatulas and valve caps. These are back actuated valves probably with string linkage like the Sander.KiltieTuba wrote:Except the first valve slide and (what looks to be the fourth) look too short to be BBb, so it might be a 4v CCjeopardymaster wrote:Looks a whole lot like an Alex BBb.

Anymore the main tuning slide on a 163 drops straight down for the CC, bends to the right on the BBb. In my limited knowledge that was ever the case. But I agree, the first valve pipe definitely appears to be shorter on Mr. Moser's horn than on mine. Could it have been sold as a BBb, then cut down to CC? Seems unlikely. I have to believe there was a time Alex CCs were hard to come by, given the longstanding strong preference in Germany for BBb and, shall we say, a partly earned national stereotype for stubbornness. A custom order seems more likely, and that indeed, sometime after Mr. Moser got his horn, Alexander formalized their CC configuration to satisfy their foreign customers - going to the drop-down main tuning slide configuration as a means to shorten the bugle length. And I'm pulling this out of my ***.
