Where do you store your hard case after you got a gig bag?

Post by Sandlapper »

I primarily use a gig bag for my 2341, and have been considering moving the hard case that came with the horn to the attic. It would be nice to have the floor space. But it gets really hot in attics in South Carolina in the summer time and I don't want to ruin the case. I don't know if the heat would damage the padding in the case or not and/or the glue that holds things together. I would appreciate any recommendations. I don't want to sell the case at this time.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hi-
I was keeping them in one of my garages, but recently moved them to the basement.

All my hard cases have been stored in the attic for years with no damage. I think. Truthfully I haven't really looked at them since I took them up there.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

You will be fine putting it in the attic. Unfortunately, we don't have basements in Texas so I store most things in the attic with no issue and that can reach 120+ degrees in the summer time.

A handy case - is a case that gets used. When a hard case is in a PITA location to retrieve - you get tempted to throw caution to the wind and just chance it by going with the soft case and that's when you end up getting bitten.

Depending on the hard case and soft case is it possible to store your horn in the soft case inside the hard case? WIth one of my large horns that sees a lot of travel on overland bus tours I had the hard case done so that horn fits in gig bag inside hard case. This way I just leave the hard case on the bus and can walk with the soft case on my back to the auditorium. Takes the hassle out of lugging the hard case. Also makes it easier to store at home. Ultimately would love to go the route of Tubajoe's Accord case.

Heat won't hurt the case but any form of moisture (even condensation) will cause trouble. Wherever you decide to stash it... make sure the area is dry.

You could put a glass top on it and used for a coffee table/storage box.

Bingo.
If I am not using it, it goes on Tubenet/ebay/craigslist. Whatever it is.
I like the coffee table idea, but my shins have never gotten along with coffee tables, and I am not sure anyone else in the household would appreciate the aesthetics.

I store my hard cases around my tubas. I don't like dent bags.

I keep the horns in the cases and store the gig bags in the basement.

I keep the cases in the garage. They are right there, if you need to put them in the car. Very handy.

i know what case your talking about it is a relatively big case personally id choose the hard case over the gig bag(i just like having the protection) but if your not going to use the hard case i would suggest selling it at my music store there new for $1153.85 you could make a nice chunk of change nut if you are going to use it i would not store it in your attic id try a cooler place like possibly a closet
Good luck!

For the last year (the amount of time I have owned a hard case) it has been stored in the band room while I finished my masters. I'm in the process of cleaning out my TA office this week so it will be going into the garage for the time being. I'll be putting the tuba in the gig bag in the hard case and storing it in the garage. The euphonium and the trombone hard cases have all been in the garage for the last two years, my band room the two years before that, and the garage before that. None have suffered in any way because of this.

All that being said, the tuba and euphonium cases will continue to stay in the garage, or my band room if there is room, but the trombone cases are probably being sold soon as my Altieri case offers better protection than the cheap case it came with and the other bone case is an extra.

Thank you, everyone, for all the great ideas! Due to the distance I have had to park the car from the practice or gig sites, with occasional non paved walk ways, the narrow wheel base on the King case makes it just a bear to get from the car to where the horn gets used, especially when playing in church and having to climb a flight of stairs, two flights if we play from the balcony. And never mind small cars, it doesn't even fit in the trunk of a full size car when three of us ride to band practice in another town, which is a bit of a drive. For that matter, neither does a gig bag, but my friends are far more comfortable with the gig bag on the back seat of their cars than the hard case so even though I agree with the idea that the horn is better off in a hard case all the time, for me the practical issue is if I want to play, gig bag it is. But it certainly is a thought to store the horn in the hard case and stuff the gig bag somewhere it will fit until needed.

Thanks,

John
