I really like the Zoom line of recorders. The built in mikes are fine for checking out your playing. Depending on the model new Zooms range from about $100 for the ZH1 to about $275 for the H4n (the one I have). Used, you should be able to find one for a lot less.

H4n: http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-ZH4N-Portabl ... m+recorder

The cheapest way I know of to record yourself :
- If you have a desktop with windows you have a "sound recorder" option already. Look under your "accessories" in the list of programs. If you don't already have a computer microphone go to Wally World and buy the cheapest desktop mic you can find . This one : http://www.walmart.com/ip/iEssentials-U ... 8890_blank" target="_blank will be ehhh ... ok . Hardley top quality recording but it will get you what you want.
- If you want to step up a little get a Blue Snowball USB mic . http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones- ... B000EOPQ7E" target="_blank . Download the free version of Audacity . Better recording quality and you can edit with Audacity.
To download to YOUTUBE you need a video maker program. Again look at your desk top and se if you have WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER. If you don't have it's a free download from Microsoft. With that you can just make a video with sound only or add pictures or hatever you want to do. You can also upload directly to YOUTUBE from the program.
Here's a sample of a simple one I made for Charley Charley Brighton. He sent me the sound files and pictures and I made the video for him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_9j9MOOy5o" target="_blank
Zoom recorders are excellent but pricey. I bought a Zoom H2n last year and it cost me $300. Worth every penny of it.

Re: What do you need to record yourself and how do you put i
Hi Bob.
One potential tip - I've found it better to put the recorder away from the tuba a bit and let the recorder document the sound of the whole room rather than trying to mic up the tuba.
Experiment with different positions in different rooms.
Warning - the first time I recorded myself I nearly slashed my wrists on the spot. Once I learnt how to handle the trauma the whole thing taught me how to hear what I was really playing and I was able to fix a lot of the worst things fairly quickly.
Once you get through the initial shock it can be very empowering.
Regards
Gerard

Using iMovie on an Apple machine is fast, easy and fun. I have a video camera I bought used on Amazon, it works greats and did not break the bank. The Apple store will list cameras compatible with the software.

Or, you could tape playing cards to the spokes. The Big Ben wrote:Stick a pencil through the speaker. Instant edginess...k001k47 wrote:Where are the settings to adjust TubeNet's edginess?bloke wrote:You can adjust the settings so that it doesn't sound edgy.

Here is a short clip I recorded with my Zoom H4n. I put it on a mic stand about ten feet in front of and ten feet above my quintet: Shake It Up. This is a raw recording. The only thing I edited was the time.bigbob wrote:Thank You Mark... I use a Zoom H1 as my Mic and plug it into my Zoom Q3 video recorder. I do this because the Q3 doesn't have a mic gain.
Option is the new ZOom Q2 that you can buy from BestBuy for about 179.00 and it has a mic Gain.
You can look at Guitar Centers website and look for used equipment, that is where I bought my H1 for 59.00.
The Zoom recorders don't tell lies and you should record yourself as much as possible.
Good luck,
Tom

Thanks goodgigs...I still don't have a cell phone and I don't have my answering machine anymore bummer...BBgoodgigs wrote:bigbob,
I don't know how to put it on youtube directly but to just hear yourself, just use your cell phone.
Almost all of them have a memo recording feature and they all have good enough microphones to
record a tuba (which isn't hard). Of course you could just call your answering machine.
It is a true mini music studio.
Good luck.

The H1 has a mic gain from 1-100, the Q3 only has High, Low ans Auto, this is why I use the H1 as my mic while setting the gain to about 40 and on the Q3 I set it to high. The new Q2 has a mic gain that goes from 1-10, have not tried it yet but I have been very temped to buy one.

Re: What do you need to record yourself and how do you put i
I don't know; but I suspect you would be happy with the H1. A lot of the extra expense of the H4n is for 4-track recording, built in mixing and processing, etc. If the H1 uses the same mics as the H4n, then it should sound good.bigbob wrote:do you feel the h1 will produce the same quality of sound as your h4n?
