5th valve--YCB661

Post by scottw »

Quick question: what is the set-up with the 5th valve on these tubas? Is it a flat whole step?
Thanks!

Flat 1 step. I liked the looks of these; actually played a gig on a borrowed 861 which I thought was very, very good for the money. The only 4/4 Yamaha CC I absolutely couldn't stand was the 822 and that's the one they kept in production. Maybe has to do with producing piston valves versus rotors, I dunno.

I only use the 5th valve for low notes really. Tuning is great with 4 valves.

With the ladder: sharp whole tone in G (meaning not quite the usual flat whole step)...

Without, flat 1/2 step.

I only touch it for 5, 1/3/4 low D and all down C#.
