I"m curious about what horn this is and whether this is often the case. I would think, as I stated, that most of the time one would have to depreciate a new horn and sell it for less than the purchase price. Certainly it's possible to buy a great horn which is then taken out of production, so that the used examples are in great demand, but do used horns appreciate in most cases?I bought mine new, detailed it to exactly how I needed it to play, have owned it for 11 years and can easily sell it today for about 20% more than what I've got in it.

It's not that it's appreciated as your looking at 2013 dollars vs 2002 dollars not sure what a 2341 cost new in 2002 but I'm guessing 3500 add 500 for some mods back then your at 4 grand. I've seen used 2341 close to 5500 I'm talking ones less than 3 years old. The newest version still averages 4500 in the used market.royjohn wrote:tofu wrote:I"m curious about what horn this is and whether this is often the case. I think the 2341 is a great, solid BBb "American style" tuba. Considering that the basic design of this model is from the 1920's, I'd say that it has stood the test of time. Great intonation and playing characteristics, even without any modifications. Play before you buy and then purchase what you like and can afford.
I purchased my brass lacquer 2341 from Matt Walters at Dillons in Dec 2004. They had 7 at the time and this was the pick of that litter between a mix of lacquer and silver horns. Eventually I had Matt install MW synthetic guides and he vented the pistons. The rest was just playing and cleaning it daily and breaking in a new horn.
Had one of the first "patented" MAW valve modification done and, for me, it was worth the money. The horn plays great. Blows much more freely, especially in the low register.
Good luck with your quest!

I've not heard about this MAW thing with the valves. Could someone enlighten me or put up a link to the information on it? Thanks Ed

Re: King 2341 owners past and present.
Just read this after my vacation break.
What I found most interesting is that the OP was looking for the opinions of cats who used to own a 2341 and then "moved on". But in reading the responses it looks like most of the board members won't sell their 2341 and many that did reconsidered bought another!
What a testament to the 2341 (and the 1241)!
