Explanation Please

Post by Dan Schultz »

Maybe the seller here is a TubeNetter. Perhaps someone can shed some light on the mouthpipe.

Could be just to get the pitch down. Dunno.

Dan,
Looks a more extreme variant if the (in)famous Parduba Double cup mp. Curious to be sure.

If I understand the question, it isn't about the mouthpiece, though it looks like a fun mouthpiece.

My guess: it's more or less in playing position in the photograph. You aren't wearing it, you're leaning over it. You also have the original hardware, which you can swap in for occasions that aren't suited to this eccentric position (hence the shoulder pads.) It could also be an adaptation for someone whose mouth is at about collarbone height, but that seems less likely.

That MP reminds me of those favored by 'Banda' artists.

I would agree, it looks like a Parduba Double Cup. I think they are still available for purchase.

My understanding was that the objective was to facilitate the upper register while still allowing decent low register playing. This started out applied to trumpet mouthpieces, but was then applied to MPs for other instruments. I used to own a trombone version that came with a valve trombone I once owned. I didn't find that it helped me achieve its stated objective. I have never tried the tuba version.

Hey, guys!

The mouthPIECE was not my concern. It is the mouthPIPE that I was curious about.

Sure, but what's to say about it, after my incisive analysis?

Could it be to facilitate playing with the instrument on sort of stand as opposed to the usual position?

 :tuba: I understood what you said. I was more-or-less directing my comment to those who were focused on the mouthPIECE.

Your analysis was OK but I'm thinking the mouthpipe was just cobbled-up to compensate for the 'franken-bell'.

So the bell isn't normal? I'm not really sure what I see there ... looks tiny, but that's exaggerated by the perspective? I think I see the right number of elbows.

Yeah... When this thread first started, I just took a glance at it and the bell appeared to be some sort of raincatcher configuration. I see now that it is a sousaphone bell. Curiosity got me. I emailed the seller asking what kind of horn it is.

The banda scene is surprisingly mysterious. Right here in our midst, these guys are tuba playing stars, but for all most of us seem to know about it, it could be happening in Madagascar.
