How many mouthpieces...
My wife asked me today how many tuba mouthpieces I needed...well all of them, sounded reasonable at the time...

Re: How many mouthpieces...
My wife and I had a similar conversation while we were dating when she realized just how many I had, and was looking to acquire
I've gotten rid of a few the last couple years, but am always on the lookout for different ones just well . . . because I can!

Well, if you have multiple horns, and each one requires multiple mouthpieces (for different kinds of sounds), then you just have to extrapolate that out, and do the math!

Re: How many mouthpieces...
How many is "many"? I remember a guy whose collection of over 100 went to ebay, after they put him in the ground. That seems to me like more mouthpieces than a person strictly ought to need.

Re: How many mouthpieces...
When a new purse follows my wife home she says, "Well it looks like you need a new mouthpiece." I have to have a wish list on hand just in case. So when your wife asks how many mouthpieces do you need, just ask how many purses, pairs of shoes, etc. she needs. (It might work.)

I can't use your suggestion (tho it is good). She'd tell me that many mouthpieces for our low brass would cut into her Oboe reed fund.opus37 wrote:When a new purse follows my wife home she says, "Well it looks like you need a new mouthpiece." Mouthpieces are merely incidental. The real question is "how many tubas do you need"?

Re: How many mouthpieces...
My wife and I have somewhat the same deal for every one new horn that comes into the house she gets 2 COACH purses. ( I recently was given back a fluglehorn that I traded for a cornet, she said that since it was not in my possession that she gets her purses............. she shoulda been a lawyer) Richt now the ratio is 3 to 6 in her favor.opus37 wrote:When a new purse follows my wife home she says, "Well it looks like you need a new mouthpiece." Re: How many mouthpieces...
For years I had one mouthpiece (a piece Schilke custom made for me back in '72). I used it for virtually everything for the next 30 some years. Along the way I picked up other pieces that came with various horns etc., but none of them worked as well as the Schilke - so the others went in a drawer. One came with a new Rudi back in '74 - I can't for the life of me understand why RM thought it was even remotely viable with that horn. Didn't work well with anything I ever tried it in. I forgot I had it until I bought a horn in 2012. Several pieces worked really well in the horn, but nothing really set it on fire -until I happened upon the old never really used Rudi piece and thought oh what the heck I'll give it a blow before I sell it. Absolutely lit the horn up - only took 38 years to find the right horn for it - thank god I hadn't sold or given it away.
Bad thing about TubeNet is I've now gathered a bunch of mp's and the Schilke is now in retirement - every horn now has it's own unique optimum MP. Aargh!

How many pairs of shoes does a woman need? I'm sure the mouthpiece count is way less than the shoe count in most every relationship.
