I have so many favorites. However, I go to this one quite often. It's very short and simple in harmony and melody, but it never fails to give me a spiritual lift. The Hosanna at the end is inspiring. I have recorded this entire Mass with the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra.

Actually, no I do not. I like many tunes but what really draws me to a piece of music is the orchestration/presentation of the material used. Hammersmith by Holst is a perfect example. To me, there are no great melodies in this piece. Nothing unusual or not found in other compositions. What makes the piece is the treatment of those melodies. Same with Mahler's symphonies. Elgar's Enigma Variations. Schwantner's ...and the mountains rising nowhere.

You get the idea.

Today that tune actually has a name: Thaxted.

He used it after The Planets for several things and it has had words set to it by many composers. Thaxted is the village where he spent a lot of his life.

I knew it had been used in other settings, but did not know it had a name, so thank you. I personally believe that in its original setting, with its original orchestration, it is some of the most beautiful music ever written.

There are so many favorite melodies... that's why I keep my mp3 player close... so I have access to any of the many I love.

Right off the top of my head is the opening to Bruckner 4. That horn solo is so beautiful it catches my attention every time and can just about bring me to tears.

"Blicket auf!" from Mahler's 8 is incredible.

The finale to Bruckner 8 is so full of excitement it gets my heart racing.
