What mouthpieces do people like on 621 C and Bb tubas.

Post by PaulTkachenko »

At the moment I'm with a Yamaha 66D4, which is 24AW-like - right?

Does anyone have any experience with any mouthpieces used by Canadian Brass ...

I really prefer funnel/Helleberg-type mouthpieces on my 621C. My favorite is the G&W Taku, which gives a bit more oomph to the low end, but I'll sometimes go with a SS Kellyberg or Schilke SHII, which give me a little more facile articulation and easier high end.

Right now, I use my 621CC mainly for trad. jazz and I stand playing. Finesse is not as critical as just getting the sound out there. For the past 2 months or so, I've been using Joe's Blokepiece Symphony cup with a narrow, fairly rounded rim, I think it's a number 2. If I were to try it in a quintet, I would use the Imperial cup - easier to control with a slightly brighter sound.

Years ago, I used to use a G&W Baer mp on it. Before the Blokepiece, I was using a Dillon Olka model. All seem to work well for me.

Has anyone tried this on a 621?

I'm guessing it was designed with the 621 in mind ...

That appears to me more like the 24AW, which, I believe, is what Bob Stewart uses on his. I guess you've really just got to try a few out side-by-side to see what sits best with you.

I started off with the stock mouthpiece, but found the 24AW vibe (or Yamaha's take on it) to be better.

I use this tuba for jazz stuff as distinct from the 621 F that I have (very happy with the Sergio Carolino Yamaha mouthpiece on that one).

I need something that's quite big ... Bobo solo will be too small I think.

Handy to know what others like.
