Christmas music for large brass ensemble

Post by Ed Jones »

Hello all. I need some suggestions for Christmas music for a large brass ensemble + percussion. Instrumentation can be no more that five horns, three trumpets, three trombones, one tuba and two percussion (one timpani, one percussion or two percussion)

The ensemble can be smaller than this but please, no quintets.

Thanks in advance for your help

This may be too easy for your group but I put the music out there just because I recently obtained them myself after a search. Plus I will ride on your coat tails in asking for further similar suggestions.

Classic Christmas Carols For Band by David Newell ((Kjos)
(Every instrument has soprano, alto, tenor & bass parts (+ duet + piano acc.))

A Best In Class Christmas by Bruce Pearson and Chuck Elledge (Kjos)
(Every instrument has melody, solo, + 2 or 3 harmonies)

Christmas favorites arranged by Michael Sweeney (Hal Leonard)
(solo + band arrangement)

Christmas Album For Brass Trio arranged by Richard Fote
(Trumpet, horn in F or trombone, trombone or tuba only)

Sammy Nestico: Christmas, the Joy and Spirit. Some easy, some moderate. Nothing too tough. 2 trumpets, horn, 2 trombones, euph, tuba, optional chimes and bells.

PM me if you want. We use that instrumentation [for over 30 years] and have all manner of Christmas rep to suggest. We are always looking for new, different, and challenging material.

Leroy Anderson has a suite of christmas carols that should work for that instrumentation. There is probably an arrangement somewhere of Hallelujah Chorus, too. FWIW, I guess.

I am sorry I don't have any suggestions. But, I have also been looking for Christmas music that would fit an orchestral brass section plus percussion. If you find any, please let us know.

We just played thru our Christmas concert music and are doing a piece for a large brass group called Toccata on Carol of the Bells by David Lovrien. It would work for a symphony orchestra brass section

Flexible instrumentation and part assignments. Interesting treatments.

I have used Christmas Carols for Band by Holmes. These are easy to play, and available on Amazon.

The brass band I play in has the full set of these:

They work equally well in just about any combination down to quintet, and have some really interesting playing in them for Christmas music.

Cheers,
Andrew
