Yesterday at a gig, one of the trumpet players brought one of the PLASTIC 'Tiger Trumpets' to show--amazing and sounds great (Check out the videos)--can't wait for the tuba version! They actually DO work!

I've seen trombones like that too. I heard they play pretty nice
I can understand why most valve oil would be bad, but I'm wondering why silicone oil wouldn't work?

The pistons and the plastic apparently can cause damage to the plastic and voids the warranty (yes, even a warranty on these horns !!!) IF regular valve oil is used. There is also, besides the Tiger valve oil, Tiger slide grease. The plastic mouthpiece is OK, but like the pBones, a regular metal mouthpiece is best.
BTW, the pistons have a brass sleeve around them AND all valves are interchangeable!! The way the horn is designed, you can 'mix and match' pistons 1, 2, & 3 in any casing --all the ports are the same. Pretty clever!
I was very impressed hearing the orchestra trumpet players trying it out after the gig yesterday in a parking lot. I can see schools buying these by the case load...

Yesterday, I saw the metal around the pistons on the Tiger trumpet-- it was 'brass color'---do they make aluminum the color of brass?

From your experiments in plastic do you think they could scale up the valve to tuba size?

They seem to like identical valves for ease of manufacturing I suppose, so maybe a rotary plastic valve set might be offered in the future.

There a hundreds of grades of aluminum ranging from very soft to very hard. However... I'm just guessing that if the sleeves are aluminum it's the cheapest, softest stuff available and anodized to give it a hard surface. Anodizing can be about any color.

ALL plastics suffer from a phenomenon know as 'creep'. ... some more than others. ABS is a 'trash' plastic unless it's alloyed with other engineered materials to give it specific properties. The clearances that are designed into items like this have to be large enough to cover things like thermal expansion, moisture absorption, and 'creep'.

There are plastics like Fortran and Valox that can exhibit near-metalic properties and Delrin has very low moisture absorption characteristics but you're not going to buy those materials to make 'toys' out of.

That's a pretty stiff grade of aluminum but probably still anodized to give it a harder surface.
