Who did your custom mouthpiece?

Post by bububassboner »

Good day,
For those of you who have had a custom mouthpiece made who did you go to? I have always wanted a bass trombone mouthpiece made to my specs but can't seem to find a company willing to do the work. So who did you go to and how was the experience?

Thanks in advance

Karl Hammond did mine back when he was at Schilke. He made a custom screw rim, based on a Schilke product, to fit on another manufacturer's mouthpiece, so it wasn't a complete unit...but nonetheless, it was custom work. Very well done.

I also had Jim at Kanstul make the mouthpiece I use with my recording bell. I wanted an 18-style bowl mouthpiece for a little bit brighter tone and projection, but with a 1.28 cup diameter to match my other mouthpieces instead of the slightly smaller Bach bowl, and the slightly smaller throat that Kanstul uses to help me and my breath support instead of the wider throat Bach uses. Jim emailed me a CNC printout which I was able to cut a cardboard template to make sure it was what I wanted, and it is perfect for me for my intended application.

My custom mouthpiece was made by Emil at Giardinelli's in New York City about 1970. It is similar to the mouthpiece that Toby Hanks was playing at the time. I still use it from time to time. Has 2 rims that are interchangeable. One of them he made on a Sunday while I waited. Great craftsmanship and a great person. Don't know where he is now but would love to know.
