Lessons in Dayton

Post by Pat S »

Anyone on this fine forum give lessons in the Dayton OH region? I'm adding the tuba to my low brass experience (euph player) and feel that I would make faster progress if learning from someone who knows what the heck they're doing. I'm currently experiencing an odd "rattle" when playing G at the bottom of the staff through the B just above it. Things settle down nicely above and below, but those particular notes appear to be pretty handy in most sheet music. The rattle smooths out on long tones, but has persisted in spite of practice. If I'm doing something wrong I'd rather kill it before it becomes a habit!

Thanks for tip on a source for lessons!

You are in luck. Norlan Bewley lives in Dayton. http://www.norlanbewley.com/. If you've ever played a TubaChristmas or Octubafest, you've played his music, and he has a studio in Dayton. I've heard him play euphonium in a tuba quartet--he knows what he's doing.

Norlan is a good guy, and will do you no wrong. I also have heard good things about John. Additionally Steve Winteregg teaches out of Cedarville.

Norlan conducts the Dayton Tuba Christmas. It is Monday, December 9 at Wright State University. You can catch him there if not beforehand.

His play and rest tip may be helpful. http://www.norlanbewley.com/tuba-tips/playing.htm" target="_blank

Id check out Tom Lukowicz, the professor at Wright State. I don't know anyone better at teaching fundamentals and he would be a huge help to you. Great guy too!
