Is this a Tubenetter? How do these play compared to the piston models? The piston BBb I have tried out (with my mpc granted), I found the upper register amazing but the below the staff was really stuffy. Comparison to MW or Miraphone appreciated.

I owned an nearly identical horn. I bought mine in 1978, or so and sold it about 8 years ago. These are superb horns. I don't know about the piston version but I know the rotary version is not stuffy anywhere and the tone of the horn belies its size. My understanding of these horns is that they are uniformly good. This is a good price; I got $8500 for mine, when I sold it. That purchaser still has it; I still see him at tuba Christmases and he is still thrilled with it. I sold it because I was getting older and it was difficult for me to handle it in its case. This is a good deal if it is legit. After I advertised my horn on EBay, some one hijacked the listing and advertised it even though I still had the horn. Its a good good price.

I've been told that factoid enough times to believe it to be truth.. but the one example I played was genuinely not a great horn, so I've become a bit skeptical. Would *love* to play a nice one.

Okay, here's the story. I bought it, straight out. As I mentioned in a previous post, I used to own one of these and it was a sensational horn. I sold that one for about $3.5K more than this one so I thought, since (due to circumstances in another post) my Orchestral CC had been fouled up, I would get this one and use it for that purpose.

The seller is a college instructor, now 83 years old. He has a former student helping him with the sale. His former student did not want to ship it but I asked him to take it to a music repair shop (Meis) in Lakewood, CO, and I arranged with them to ship it Via AMTRAK. It left there this morning and is due here, in the Portland Union Station, on Monday. Both the seller and his former student were quite forthcoming about the Sale and seem to be really nice people. The Repair shop owner, Greg Meis, was happy to look the horn over and pack and ship it. He told me the horn was in beautiful shape and he did not think it needed cleaning, even. I have the shipping bill from AMTRAK and the total to pack and ship and the fare were $80. Everyone, so far, has been helpful and very nice. I am anxiously awaiting Monday's call from AMTRAK.

Using the serial number, I contacted Peter Hirsbrunner and found out the horn, HBS-192, was made in 1990, weighs ten kgs. and was otherwise Identical to the one I had previously which was made in 1978. I was amazed when I e-mailed Hirsbrunner, that Peter Hirsbrunner responded and responded in less than a day.

So, I hope I am about to be happy and can go on with life as I care to know it. I think I was lucky to find such a treasure. And to answer the OP's question, no, it is not sold by a Tubenetter.
