Hey all,
I'm working in China with a production of Chicago: The Musical. The cast is the West-End cast from London, and the management is mostly a who's who list in Broadway.
They just informed me that I need to take my horn, which isn't what I wanted to do. They want to check the instrument, and are prepared to buy the flight case. The horn is a Conn 12J. What flight case works with this horn?
The company hired me last week, and I've been trying to get them to either buy a ticket for the horn or provide me one like they are with the bass. This is incredibly time sensitive, as I fly out next Monday, so ASAP suggestions are best.
Thanks,
Nick

Currently waiting for Unitec to get back to me to see if they have any horns in stock. Kevin from Tuba Exchange sent me over there.

I'm pretty sure the company already bought a Unitec case and is having it overnighted. The horn is expected to be in a road case throughout the whole tour, as it's either going to go in the equipment truck or fly with me from venue to venue. I will know tomorrow whether or not they did that.
I have the old shell case that was made for the horns, but it's beaten up pretty badly, and I seriously doubt it would survive between four and ten flights.

Even if you get the unitec case, I would still recommend that you use a ball as bloke suggested, or something with give to go into the bell throat and extend such as to keep the bell rim away from the end of the case.
Wishing you all the best in your flights and performances,

Well, it turns out the company has been procrastinating so much, the management was all fired and they brought in Nederlander, who's the official production company of Chicago on Broadway. At this point, I'll never get the case in time since it wasn't ordered, so I requested either they buy a ticket for the horn or provide me one when I get there (I actually rather that, so I don't have to drag an instrument around an airport for once, and my horn is pretty beat up and not the best).
We're supposed to leave on Monday, and there's so much to do--not the least of which is they still need to buy our tickets!

Agreed. They have a big mess to clean up, so they have pushed back our departure by a few days while they figure this stuff out. I've convinced them to rent a tuba along with the bass, and I'm supposed to have a call soon by the general manager to discuss my preferences. I didn't really want to drag a Conn 12J to the other side of the world, and it would be nice to not stress about an instrument for a change. I just hope "B-flat" is understood in China!Curmudgeon wrote:One good thing about Nederlander is that they mean business and have the chops. I bet things will happen much faster and more thoroughly now.
Thanks! Been to China before, but this itinerary looks a lot better than my last one. We have a whole day off in Beijing--meaning I get to see the Great Wall this time!Curmudgeon wrote:Safe and happy travels. Gonna be an adventure, to be sure!
