Currently 17 below here in Minnesota. Tomorrow wind chill around -50. Good thing we have a Cabela's in town so I could buy my much needed winter jacket. Nothing better. I might even go sledding tomorrow.

Re: Update Update
It's going to be cold tonight and tomorrow but the snowfall the weather goofballs were crowing about did not materialize. If I played tuba as badly as these guys predict the weather.... I'd NEVER get another gig!

This is crazy! Houston,Texas is 20 degrees colder than Bangor, Maine. Guess those folks in Maine have to agree with Al Gore. Can't help but wonder if he'll ever get another gig?

Tonight's tuba forecast: F with a slight chance Ab, G if a trumpet comes in from the north...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

I've lived through many winters sporting single-digit and sub-zero temps...yes, in "the south". This cold spell is supposed to last for a few days, and then (at least around here) warm back up a bit. Is the hoax *such* an important part of the catechism and *such* an important sacrament of the Church of Progress that - when it is all too apparent that reality fails to trace the narrative - some quasi-scientific new term must be invented to "explain" it...
(other than the pre-hoax/time-honored, "hey...it's winter, and it's cold") ?
...When I google "polar vortex", you see, page-after-page-after-page of hits are all from webpages created within the last DAY or two.![]()
Those issues having been addressed, the hand-wringing-causing few-years-lasting overall "warm spell" is apparently over...and I (for one) am sad to see it go. Summers aren't quite as hot as they were a few years ago...but (as when I was young) they've also become more rainy again...and (being more wet) also more difficult to get a truck down into the woods to clear out deadwood (you know...those trees that grow large, die, rot, and ultimately expel huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere...??). Winters are (as when I was young) beginning to become a little bit colder again. It didn't matter so much when I was a kid - and electricity and natural gas were cheap, but centrally-manipulated markets and draconian taxation have rendered this stuff damned expensive.
![]()
A group of warmist nuts - at the height of the southern hemisphere's summer - got several icebreakers stuck in the ice on a "global warming" / "melting Antarctic ice" - studying expedition...![]()
http://www.climatedepot.com/2014/01/01/ ... te-claims/
Getting back to northern hemispheric issues, here is a 2012/2013 comparison of Arctic ice for you:
...but (in deference to the almighty Church of Progress) here is its holy crucifix...
The pictures of Arctic ice in '12 and '13 shown above--that were shown on FOX News--are an example of an extreme version of data cherry-picking. The explanation is very simple.
The level of sea ice fluctuates. 2012 was an extremely bad year for sea ica - really really bad. It was down, at its lowest to barely half what it normally is. Given that, it was absolutely certain that 2013 would be a better year for sea ice than 2012, and a number of people have posted the fact in an attempt to convince us that sea ice isn't decreasing - which, if you look at more than a one year comparison, it clearly is. The 2013 figures are still way down compared with the average of the last 30 years. The posting does serve to refute exaggerated claims made last year from equally misleading data that sea ice would be gone in a few years.
I'll make a comparison - it's like posting the number of murders in New York for September 2013, and claiming that because it's far fewer than the previous year, crime must be on a downward trend.
In any case, lousy weather today....

Quick tip -- if you're outside in the frigid weather today, breathe through your nose as much as you can. If you breathe through your mouth and fill your lungs with cold air, your body temperature will go down much faster.

Re: Update Update
Had our first rehearsal last night since our last concert on December 17. Only 14 musicians present of our normal about 50 due to the weather still being a fit 'iffy'. It was still good to be back.
Looking forward to brass band tonight!

Re: Update Update
We had our first pipe burst yesterday since purchasing our home in Sept. 2012. Lucky for us it was in the most "convenient" place it could have happened. It was in what will become the laundry room, so the floor is tiled and we were going to redo the drywall anyway. My wife got the water shut off quickly enough to where it didn't do too much damage elsewhere. Mostly it just got the cement floor and a little drywall wet.
