You must be able bodied, between the ages of 19 and 27 years of age and willing to seriously devote the time and energy needed to develop the skills required in the trade that will lead to a full time position with Oberloh Woodwind and Brass Works....."

1) Unless you're really lucky, you have to move for the best opportunities. It's part of the experience, and well worth it. I've never regretted moving away from home.

2) The EEOC laws are a bunch of bunk. Ok, so an old guy applies? Besides age, there are a billion other reasons to not hire one person over another. It's a completely subjective process (with good intentions).

I understand that the law is the law. You can't really say that stuff in job postings, I know that. Same thing with race, ethnicity, blah, blah, blah...

But that's just the legal stuff. Realistically, there are dozens and dozens of criteria to use when deciding who to hire. So if 2 people apply (one who is 20 and one who is 50), it's not as if the employer is doomed into having to hire the older (or younger) person. If age isn't a factor, then something else WILL be a deciding factor.

Federal regulations aside, I understand completely why Dan would want a younger person to apprentice: he's gonna invest years in teaching this person a variety of skills and impart the Oberloh work ethic. Why would you do that with a 50 year old and not get the full return on your 'investment'?

Probably by phone -- while I have emailed with Dan in the past, he's super busy and a hard dude to get in touch with. I always had more luck by phone than by email.

heres what he said

We are only considering responsible, hard working, trustworthy applicants who have a strong interest in a career in band instrument repair and restoration, 19-27 yrs of age that are able bodied, can follow instructions and that have a good mechanical aptitude. A performance level of competence on woodwinds and/or brass instruments is a must. They must have a valid drivers license, be a non smoker and non drug user.
The position is not a paying one for the first 12 months but afterword, if the apprentice has proven a level of competence, they will be paid a commission on there daily productivity. If you are not local, this is a big jump and may require some serious thought on you part. Where are you located?

In all honesty, if you know the info. that someone is asking for..........be kind enough to tell them.

I also found a good time to call Dan tomorrow. Please don't assume I'm lazy, unresourceful, or incompetent. And I don't blame anyone for initially thinking I was.
